When asked why, the response was simply “it’s the algorithm.” Apple (with Goldman Sachs) insisted gender was not used as an input, claiming “fairness through unawareness.” Yet, by standard anti-discrimination rules, focusing only on intent misses the point if outcomes are unequal.
