Four buckets help. Virtual assistants give health information and navigation support; WHO’s S.A.R.A.H. is a good example and works 24/7 in eight languages. Triage bots ask structured symptom questions and route users to the right level of care; NHS 111 online is very clear that it does not diagnose but directs people to what to do next. Clinical decision support assistants sit beside clinicians, not instead of them; the FDA’s 2018 clearance of Viz.AI’s stroke triage software is a canonical example, and the FDA explicitly said it should not replace a full patient evaluation. Remote monitoring assistants are quieter tools that collect blood pressure, glucose, weight and similar signals from connected devices so teams can manage patients outside the hospital.

Under the bonnet, the tech stack is mixed, which matters more than the marketing usually admits. Natural language processing and large language models power chat, summarisation and voice interaction. Conventional machine learning still does plenty of ranking and prediction work. Computer vision dominates image-heavy workflows like radiology and triage. Sensors and connected medical devices feed the home-monitoring side. A 2024 peer-reviewed landscape analysis of FDA-cleared AI/ML devices found radiology accounted for roughly 77% of approvals through October 2023, which tells you that healthcare AI is still, in large part, a story about images and workflow, not just chatbots. The benefits are real when the use case is narrow and the workflow fit is good. Access improves because digital assistants can work around the clock: WHO’s S.A.R.A.H. is always available, NHS 111 online now handles around 550,000 completed triages each month, and Cedars-Sinai Connect offers 24/7 virtual care with chatbot-led intake. Efficiency improves in certain settings too: in a JAMA Neurology cluster-randomised trial, AI-enabled large-vessel-occlusion alerts reduced stroke door-to-groin time by 11.2 minutes, and a large multicentre Frontiers in Stroke study found interventionalist notification was 39.5 minutes faster where the AI platform was used. Personalisation improves when assistants combine patient-reported data with context: Cedars-Sinai’s system blends symptom intake with EHR data, while Ochsner’s digital hypertension model pairs Bluetooth cuffs with pharmacist-physician support and showed better blood-pressure control, medication adherence and lower acute-care use. Fancy demos impress boards; safe boring systems usually survive first contact with a busy clinic.
